What is Periodontology?

The health of your gums, bones and connective tissues are important in ensuring the health of your teeth is maintained

Periodontology is the branch of dentistry that focuses on the health of the supporting structures of the teeth, including the gums, bones, and connective tissue. It is a specialised field that requires additional training and education beyond dental school.

Periodontists are dental professionals who are trained to diagnose and treat problems with the gums and other supporting structures of the teeth. They work closely with general dentists and other dental specialists to provide comprehensive care for their patients. Our visiting Periodontist, Dr Vipul Patel undertakes all aspects of Periodontology at Cherry Trees Dental Practice.

One of the primary concerns in periodontology is gum disease, also known as periodontitis. This condition is caused by the build-up of plaque and tartar on the teeth, which can lead to inflammation and infection of the gums. If left untreated, gum disease can cause the gums to pull away from the teeth, leading to tooth loss.

There are several stages of gum disease, ranging from gingivitis, which is a mild form of gum inflammation, to advanced periodontitis, which can cause serious damage to the supporting structures of the teeth. Early detection and treatment are crucial in order to prevent the progression of gum disease.

Periodontists are trained to identify and treat gum disease using a variety of methods, including scaling and root planing, which involves the removal of plaque and tartar from the teeth and roots; gum surgery, which may be needed to repair damaged tissue or to reduce pockets in the gums; and the use of antibiotics to kill bacteria and reduce inflammation.

In addition to gum disease, periodontists also treat other problems with the supporting structures of the teeth, such as abscesses, jawbone loss, and tooth alignment issues. They may also place dental implants, which are artificial teeth roots that are used to replace missing teeth.

Periodontists work closely with their patients to develop a personalized treatment plan that meets their specific needs and goals. This may involve regular cleanings and check-ups, as well as more advanced treatments, such as gum surgery.

In order to become a periodontist, a dental professional must complete additional training and education beyond dental school. This typically involves completing a postgraduate program in periodontology, which can take several years to complete.

Periodontology is an important field within dentistry that plays a vital role in the overall health of the teeth and gums. If you are experiencing problems with your gums or have other concerns about the supporting structures of your teeth, it is important to seek the care of a qualified periodontist. They can provide you with the specialized treatment you need to maintain the health and function of your teeth.
